Ghana Bound
On Saturday, November 17, 2007, Amara and I will be departing on a medical mission to the Baptist Medical Center in Nalerigu, a small town in the Northern Region of Ghana for 4 weeks. The purpose of this trip is two- fold: to further my education in medicine and to provide medical care for these people. Our clinical responsibilities will include outpatient clinic, inpatient care, obstetrics, pediatrics, and surgery. We will be treating many children suffering from malnutrition and typhoid fever as well as adults with malaria, pneumonia, tropical ulcers, inguinal hernias, pregnancy complications, schistosomiasis, hypertension, and anemia. We will be working alongside American doctors who have lived and served in Ghana for years.
In Charles Sheldon's book In His Steps, the townspeople of Raymond are challenged to live their lives and make decisions in the context of and response to the question, "What would Jesus do?" Interestingly, Jesus spent a large amount of his time healing the sick. In my life, I have been encouraged and motivated to do the same. This project is important to me because disease plays a disproportionately large role in the suffering of people in developing nations around the world. By meeting the physical needs of those who are sick and dying, we are then able to display the power of God.
Even though I have always been fascinated by the world of difference experienced in being in a different part of the world, I have not had a background of any short- or long-term international work as it relates to medicine. I anticipate that this experience will help give me a vision for future medical service. God has opened the door for me to serve in a ministry of healing that is truly a privilege. The opportunity to serve internationally offers a unique experience to work with some of the most impoverished and unreached people.
Excitingly, we have been able to apply for and receive several scholarships to help fund our trip from the Christian Medical & Dental Association, the Baptist Medical & Dental Fellowship, and The Faile Foundation.
There are still a lot of preparations to be done for the trip, so your prayer support is very welcomed! =)
