OHSU 2nd Annual Student Volunteer Recognition Ceremony

Volunteer of the Year Award
The Volunteer of the Year Award goes to a student who has demonstrated a sustained personal mission toward service. This person exemplifies OHSU’s mission to a variety of service to both the community and the world.
The Honorable Mention goes to: AMARA! Amara is a great example of dedication to service on many levels. Amara has volunteered internationally in many countries. She served as a Spanish translator and saw patients in rural clinics in the mountains of Ecuador, worked with Northwest Medical Teams both in child development at an orphanage in Sibiu, Romania and in community building in Oaxaca, Mexico.
In the US, Amara has volunteered at the Lawndale Christian Health Center an urban clinic in Chicago, IL, during which she treated clinic patients, organized community health fairs, made house calls with physicians, and acted as a Spanish interpreter.
On campus, Amara helped create the Medical Spanish Society, a group dedicated to the development of caring, competent, bilingual physicians. With this group, she helped create a medical Spanish curriculum to be offered as a student-taught course for medical students with little-to-no Spanish experience.
In addition to her work with on medical Spanish, Amara has been the student leader for the Christian Medical and Dental Association this past year. As student coordinator for the group, she works to arrange speakers, facilitates meetings, organizes community service projects, and plans social activities.
