Here, Mi, Out
For the past 4 weeks, I've been doing a community health rotation with a family medicine doctor here in Eugene, which is about 2 hours south of Portland. I've been very blessed to have my weekends off so that I can travel for various reasons, the most important being to see and spend time with Amara. Most of the time, I was driving back up to Portland. However, two weekends ago, Amara took her 15 year-old hand-me-down Oldsmobile and made the drive through raininess to come and visit me down here. Lucky me!
I had an internal medicine scientific meeting to go to in the morning, so she came just in time for lunch on Saturday. We had a nice little meal in my apartment here and then decided to take a walk around the University of Oregon's campus. On our excursion, we had a melodiously delightful time singing what we wanted to say Broadway musical-style. We were inspired by standing in the middle of this amphitheater where your voice gets echoed and amplified back to yourself (it's quite cool).
Our voices set the trees ablaze in flaming oranginess
After our pleasant walk, to went for a fun jog up to Hendricks Park, Eugene's oldest city park with a world-renowned rhododendron garden. Unfortunately, the rhododendrons are not in bloom this time of year.
"I'm prettier if I don't stay unbloomed for the winter"
That night, we met up with Steve and Miwa (the Oregon Duck's best Oregon buddy) and had dinner at a yummy Thai place. I ordered a spicy basil fried rice. They have a funny rating system for the level of spicyness you can pick going from very mild to "extremely wild." I went for the "wild" (one step below "extremely wild"), which turned out to be a good level for me. After dinner, we went to their house and played an interesting board game called "Hear Me Out." This is a game that was originally made available through Starbucks stores (like Cranium) that has aspects of Scattergories mixed with an oral presentation part. It was fun.. I got to explain why "The Karate Kid" is one of my favorite movies as well as offer a strange explanation of where tornadoes come from. In the end, Amara and Steve had the most points and tied for the win.
 Good game for the talkative
On Sunday, Amara and I went with Miwa to meet up with one of Amara's good friends Brian for breakfast at a movie-themed restaurant named Studio One. Afterwards, we went to a cafe briefly before heading to church at First Baptist Church of Eugene.
To round out our weekend in Eugene, Amara and I went to Sweet Life Patisserie on the advice of her roommate Chanda. They had a wonderful selection of delicious and tempting baked goods including cookies, cakes, pastries, breads, pies, brownies, and more. We indulged ourselves with a chocolate eclair, some brownies, and a tart. Amara ended up bringing a batch of goodies home for her roommates.
Parting with Amara was sad, but fortunately, it would not be long before I would get to see her again! The next weekend would be an enlightening and uplifting time spent in Louisville, Kentucky.. but more on that to come later.. =)
