Cover the Uninsured Week
Last week (May 1-6) was national Cover The Uninsured Week. I'm proud to say that OHSU students led the way in putting on the main events in Portland for the week on campus and in the community. For the week, we had a keynote speaker from Canada talk about their healthcare system on Monday, a debate regarding universal healthcare coverage in Oregon featuring one of the state senators on Wednesday, a panel of safety net clinic providers on Thursday, and a Community Health Fair to serve the community on Saturday. The health fair was hosted in North Portland at a middle school and included health screenings for adults (blood pressure, body mass index, vision, lead, and glucose), educational materials (diet/nutrition, safety, women's health, and organ donation), entertainment for kids (face painting, balloon animals, and coloring books), and refreshments (bagels, fruit, and water). The turnout was quite good, and I think we all had a good time putting it on.

Birthday Dinner
On Monday night, a group of us went out to a nice restaurant downtown called Henry's to celebrate our friend Matthew's 24th birthday. We all wore nicer clothes because he was in the mood to get dressed up and go out (and what the birthday boy wants, the birthday boy gets). It was a semi-surprise since he wasn't aware that all of us would be coming (he was only expecting himself and a couple of girls.. perhaps we shouldn't have come??). Anyway, it was a good time of getting out to do something that made me feel less like a medical student and more like a working young adult (which doesn't happen that often).
 Happy Birthday, Matt!
If you're interested, here are the rest of the pics I took from that night. (Matt astutely pointed out that he has quite a few attractive female friends.)
Run, Run
After our CMDA Bible study on Tuesday night, a friend and I went out for a nice evening jog. The weather was super nice, and the company was also excellent. We took a path down the hill from where I live and then back up. The run didn't seem too long, but it was still very challenging on the return trip since it was pretty much downhill in the beginning and then uphill on the way back. While I was studying, I decided to figure out how long the course we ran was by plotting it on Google Maps. I was pleasantly surprised to find that we had gone for a 3.8 mile run (which is the farthest I've run in almost a year).
