Weekend Update
Brain & Body Fair
As a part of the OHSU Brain Awareness program, I volunteered at the 7th Annual OHSU Brain & Body Fair, which was held at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) on Friday afternoon. The fair featured exciting activities and exhibits for all ages to demonstrate the tremendous ability and potential of the brain. I worked with the Parkinson's Center of Oregon people at a booth talking about tremor. We had a strap-on device that fit on kids' arms to simulate a tremor (a fancy word for shaking). This way, the kids could see what it was like to try and write with a tremor. Some of my other classmates were volunteering at the brain dissection table, where kids could see the anatomy of a real brain. Before leaving for the evening, the event sponsors were quite generous and gave us a pizza/beer dinner after the exhibit closed. | |
Dinner and a Movie
On Saturday night, I went out with some friends to Virginia Cafe for dinner and happy hour. My meal consisted of a $2 vodka/coke and a pretty good mushroom swiss burger with fries. Afterwards, we headed over to the Regal cinemas to see the Academy Award winning (for best director Ang Leee) movie, Brokeback Mountain. I thought it was a bit slow at first, but the story did start to move along and the cinematography of Montana's beautiful landscape was quite nice. Overall, I thought it was a pretty good movie.
Double D
My friend here sent out a funny e-mail at 4 in the morning (apparently while she was still inebriated) inviting people over for dinner. She mentioned that although she would never have "double d's," we could still have a double d (dumpling dinner, that is). So, a bunch of us gathered on Sunday night to eat dumplings while watching the movie Ever After followed by Grey's Anatomy. I helped (along with two other people) in the production of approximately 200 dumplings, which contained pork, cabbage, mushroom, green onion, and ginger. Homemade dumplings sure are good and yummy.
Slimming down
I've been going back and forth between getting an LCD monitor for a while. In all honesty, I really have no NEED for one, but it would be nice to have. Not only would it be bigger (I wanted a 19", which would be 3" larger than the viewable portion of my 17" CRT), but it would save me electricity, give me more space on my desk, and supposedly, be better for my eyes. Late last night, I saw a deal that I just couldn't pass up. I was able to snag a Viewsonic VA902b 19" Flat Panel LCD Monitor from Office Depot for $160 after mail-in-rebates, shipped free!

I hope it doesn't have any dead pixels.. I'm excited to watch tv on a screen reasonably as big as a normal tv.
