Thanksgiving in SD
Happy (belated) Thanksgiving from sunny San Diego, CA! My vacation began on Wednesday night with a failed attempt to play some night tennis (because we weren't able to get the lights on). In lieu of something active, Shelley and I did the exact opposite and had a big dinner at a French bistro-like place serving cajun cuisine followed by some TV watching. On Thursday morning, I flew down to San Diego. While the transition wasn't as dramatic as going from snowing to sunny, the weather in Portland was about 30 degrees different than in San Diego (it was a welcome change).
Instead of turkey this year, my family went out to a Chinese restaurant and had Peking duck and lobster. If poultry dishes were ranked as royalty, Peking duck would definitely be the KING of the PEcKING order.
Friday was almost a 24-hour experience. I woke up in the morning and did random stuff before heading out with Vince, Jenn, and Noah for lunch. Afterwards, we basked at some tables outside of a Starbucks and Coldstone's until Annie (and her crew) joined us. Later, my family had dinner at one of our favorite steak places in town, Carver's. I ordered the veal chop with a mushroom brandy sauce. Following dinner, I drove over to Annie's house for some Texas Hold 'Em. Fun times, even though I was the first to get eliminated (going all-in with a suited King/10, I was beat out on the river by Jenn who paired one of her 9's). When I dropped off Jenn and Noah, I stopped by for some pecan pie (notice the rhyme?), which was made by Julie. Good stuff! We proceeded to play a few rounds of an Italian card game called "Bang!" Getting home at around 3am, I thought I was a night owl until I discovered that my brother was still out and about. When he returned home about a half an hour later, we ended up staying up for another 3 hours or so talking. By the time I got to bed, it was 6:30am and the sun was already beginning to rise.
Yesterday and today were a bit more uneventful, filled mostly with eating randomness Tomorrow, I'll probably have to get started on some studying since I'll be missing my morning classes on Monday/Tuesday (my flight returns to Portland at 11am on Tuesday).
