Encapsulated
Recently, overnight temperatures dropped down into the mid-30s. A few weeks ago I was asked by a friend how I stayed warm at night. It's a good question, especially considering my no frills/heat and open-window policies. Interestingly, I found a discrepancy between the locations of active cooling and passive heat loss (both of which contribute to the problem of staying warm). Indeed, my night-time comfort relies on a reconfiguration of my bed coverings. The key to maximal protection against cold expousre and minimal dissipation of heat is layers. To guard against cold exposure, I use a flat sheet, a down comforter, and a second comforter on top of me. To trap heat from escaping, I use a fitted sheet, a doubled-over fleece blanket, and a second fitted sheet underneath me. Together, the layers above and below form a functional capsule of insulation, which is completely conducive to a comfortable night's rest.
