The Author of Life
"Since God is the Author of life, it is a serious thing to stamp out a life which He has permitted to come to pass." ~Norman Geisler Earlier tonight, CMDA hosted a discussion on abortion with the director of Oregon Right to Life and a practicing OB/GYN doctor in the community as speakers. The talk was preceded by a video clip taken from the "Eclipse of Reason," which depicted a D&E abortion via fetoscopy. The whole process was very gruesome and blatantly depicted the destruction of life. While modern methods of abortion are slightly different, the bottom line is that a baby's life is still being ended in the process. Here's an excerpt from the National Right to Life website:
Abortion ends a pregnancy by destroying and removing the developing child. That baby’s heart has already begun to beat by the time the mother misses her period and begins to wonder if she might be pregnant (about 31 days after the mother’s last menstrual period or LMP). Surgical abortions are usually not performed before seven weeks, or 49 days LMP. By that time, the baby has identifiable arms and legs (day 45) and displays measurable brain waves (about 40 days). During the seventh through the tenth weeks, when the majority of abortions are performed, fingers and genitals appear and the child’s face is recognizably human. It is important to recognize that life begins at conception. Abortion is essentially the killing of an unborn baby, which is sometihng that few people (if any) would argue in favor of.
In the U.S., abortions are legal during all three trimesters (many people think they are only allowed during the first trimester, which isn't true), due to the Roe v. Wade decision. Fortunately, the number of abortions performed per year has been declining, although it is still quite high.
