Goodbye Summer
Back to School
It rained on Monday. That was the first day of school for us. The whole gloomy weather thing was amazingly symbolic. Fortunately, the sun has come back out since. But just like a breeze, summer was here and now is gone. Going through the grind of school will be tough and busy, especially this year since I'm participating more heavily in a bunch of extracurriculars (Christian Medical and Dental Association, OHSU Student Council, Internal Medicine Interest Group, Student National Medical Association, Honors Medical Spanish elective, Students for Student Run Clinic, Neurology clinical research). However, I'm content in my endeavors and am looking forward to making this year a good one.
US Open Series: Portland
For the past couple of months, tennis has been a major theme in my life both passively and actively. I've spent countless hours watching numerous US Open Series tennis matches on tv as well as actually getting out, running around, and hitting some balls. Recently, I've started to play with classmates, too, which is cool. I hope to get in a bunch more playtime before the rainy season hits here in Portland. I know there must be indoor courts somewhere, but they will inevitably require some type of membership, which I am not sure I will be interested in partaking (since I'm living on a student's budget).
Duwamps
Despite soaring gas prices, I decided to drive up to Seattle on Friday night and visit Jenn. It was great to see her again. We stayed up pretty late as I got to experience her Taiwan missions trip via hundreds of pictures and verbal narration. On Saturday morning, we had some all-you-can-eat dim sum at a place called Top Gun (what an awesome name). While it wasn't a buffet, between the two of us, Jenn and I downed 9 dishes of dim sum and left stuffed. Afterwards, we picked up Sharlene from the airport and headed downtown. We spent some time at the Pike Place Market and went shopping a bit before going to take an "underground tour." On the tour, we learned that there are some underground sidewalks in downtown near the waterfront that are a remnant of the very interesting history of Seattle, which was originally named "Duwamps" after the tribe of Native Americans that lived there. For dinner, Jenn generously treated us at the Coho Grill during happy hour (it was after 9pm by the time we ate). To complement my Corona, I enjoyed a yummy shrimp and crab quesadilla and a halibut fish taco.
Overhead
After her 16 mile training run (for a marathon) last week, I went with my friend Shelley to Popeye's for lunch. Imagine that.. running 16 miles and then eating Popeye's. I guess she earned a chance to splurge dietarily. Anyway, she's now the second person I've taken to eat Popeye's for their first time. She liked it, of course, because it's like the best fried chicken. When done with lunch, we hit up the Nike Factory Store since we had passed it on the way and it was very close. Compared to the men's stuff, the women's athletic pants are all made of such softer and nicer materials. So much in fact, that I was tempted to buy some women's gear. I did not succumb to that temptation, though. I did, however, end up buying a single item: a new hat!
If I played tennis professionally, I probably could've gotten this for free
I think it'll serve me well on those days either when 1) I'm running late or 2) I'm feeling lazy about combing my hair.
