Living It Up

Last Monday was my last exam as a first year medical student. Since then, I've been living it up while on my ~2 week summer vacation.

On Tuesday, I helped a friend from school move into an apartment close to campus. The proud moment of the day was being able to maneuver his super long couch through the small door and narrow entrance-way of his new place. There were times when the whole thing was stuck (which totally reminded me of the Friends episode where Ross keeps yelling "piVOT!" as they try to carry a big sofa up this staircase).

Wednesday was spent driving, Portland to Union City with one gas/bathroom break. Unfortunately, there was a costly period of about 15 minutes in which I wasn't driving when I got pulled over for speeding. Going 80 mph in a 70 mph zone can hardly qualify as speeding. It was totally the flow of traffic. Anyways..

Being back in the Bay Area during the end of the week allowed me to live it up as a living stone and visit all the old LSF small groups I used to attend (Fremont, San Mateo, and Friday) as well as LSCC worship service on Sunday. While times have changed, the same welcoming and quality fellowship still remained the same.

I helped Jerm with a company picnic he organized for his program at Lockheed Martin on Thursday afternoon. With a huge budget, we partook in a delicious barbeque feast featuring ribs, beef brisket, pulled pork, and chicken along with mac&cheese, cornbread muffins, cole slaw, and potato salad as sides. He did a good job with the activities by hosting a kickball tournament, a limbo contest, a relay race, and a golfing challenge.

On Friday, I had brunch with Superman, Pocahontas, and Alan at IHOP in Foster City. Afterwards, Pocahontas and I were driving around for a while and then decided to hit up Santana Row, the fanciest strip of shops in the South Bay. The weather was beautiful, making it excellent to walk around and enjoy our boba beverages while browsing the pricey stylings of the well-to-do.

Still until today, I'm feeling the effects of the bachelor party for Dan that was on Saturday. But it's not what you may be thinking. The day was planned as a sports extravaganza. We played football in the morning and basketball in the afternoon. My thighs feel like they've been beaten down (mostly from running around so much). At night, we played some no limits Texas Hold 'Em. Fittingly, Dan came out the big winner (the festivities were for him) on the last hand with a straight.

After lunch with LSCC folks on Sunday, I was on my way down to San Diego. Three quarters of a gas tank and seven and a half hours later I arrived at the Jack In The Box near my house for some take-out dinner. As it turns out, a bunch of old high school friends were getting together and gathering at my house that night. We had a fun time just catching up and talking in circles about random topics. The atmosphere was quite hearty with laughter.

When on vacation, every day is like a weekend. Today was no exception.. no Monday blues for me. I had breadsticks and salad for lunch at Pat&Oscar's and then headed off to the beach for some body surfing. The water wasn't very cold, but the waves weren't particularly friendly. I hadn't been in the ocean in years, and having gone back, it's not something I will miss that much. I can't say the same about the beach. Now that's a quality place to hang.

Being in San Diego isn't complete without some Mexican food. And so for dinner we went to Cotixan's. Somehow, I remember the shredded chicken burritos being more flavorful. Perhaps my mouth was still tainted from the salt water of the Pacific. After dinner, a few of us came back to my place and watched White Noise on DVD. Not a scary movie, despite what David thinks (his dislike of scary movies is funny).

This break has been packed with activity and not as much restfulness, which is also highly desired. Tiredness is setting in, so I'll post some pictures later.
