Facing Forward

Approved

I received an e-mail last week containing the following:
"We apologize for the delay in getting back to you. The GCRC Scientific Advisory Committee voted to approve your application."
This means that I'm officially in for doing clinical research on Parkinson's disease patients here at OHSU this summer. Yay for funded research opportunities..=)

Fast Fuud Revue

Here's my take on a bunch of the latest offerings from various fast food chains:
Arby's: Corned Beef Reuben Market Fresh Sandwich
While my favorite Arby's sandwich is still the Beef 'n Cheddar (with its beefy, cheesy, and saucy goodness served up on an onion bun), the Corned Beef Reuben is quite good and won't leave any fan of corned beef disappointed.

McDonald's: Tillamook Cheddar and Bacon Big 'N Tasty
A new twist on a good sandwich, but not necessarily worth the extra mulah, especially since the tastes of the Tillamook cheddar and bacon are barely noticeable. I'd recommend sticking with the $1 Dollar Menu items (Double Cheeseburger or McChicken).

Dairy Queen: Mushroom Swiss GrillBurger, Bacon Cheddar GrillBurger
Despite flavorful toppings, the 1/4 lb burgers are rather unfilling and fairly expensive ($3.50+ each). Serves me right for going to DAIRY QUEEN for a burger.

Jack In The Box: Applewood Bacon Ciabatta Burger (discontinued)
Following the success of the Pannido sandwiches, Jack In The Box tries again with another "gourmet" bread variety. While eccentricly hard to spell, the ciabatta burger offered nothing special, except its shape. And now, the beef patty versions have been ditched for chicken adorned counterparts.. I still don't think that's a recipe for success.
World's Strongest Ultimate Fighting Champion

Watching the Met-Rx World's Strongest Man competitions on ESPN impresses me. To see those 300+ lb hefties lift and carry two 400 lb motorcyles or tug a 25 ton semi-truck is crazy. While I don't intend (nor want) to ever become that big or strong, I do aspire to develop myself towards extreme strength, power, and function. Function is being able to endure through manual labor tasks, play competitively in sports, have fun with outdoor activities (i.e. hiking, rock climbing), and excel in the face of physical adversity. (This post was also motivated, as the title suggests, by watching the Ultimate Fighting Championship really late on Wednesday night.)

The Power of One

After noticing that I've been drinking beer on a fairly regular basis, I decided to stage an intervention on myself to preserve my liver, shave some calories from my diet, and keep a few more dollars in my pocket. I call it the "One-step Program," and it is surprisingly simple. Step 1: Don't buy alcohol. It works great because you can't drink what you don't have. The plan went into effect this morning when I was at the grocery store and came home without any beer. So far so good!
