Ambiguous -> ClarifiedAnd on the way down I saw you And you saved me From myself And I won't forget The way you loved me On the way down Almost fell right through But I held onto you While watching a segment of "Teen News" (don't ask why), I caught a mini-story on the new singer Ryan Cabrera. Though it's not super special, I do like the song "On The Way Down" quite a bit because I think it's quite catchy sounding. But one thing I wondered about was what the lyrics were referring to. There's an ambiguity in the lyrics as to whether it's about his relationship with some girl, or alternatively, about God's love. Similar to "Hanging By a Moment" by Lifehouse, the lyrics could be interpreted in either direction, although only one would be true. During the interview with Ryan Cabrera, I was pleasantly surprised to find that he was, in fact, talking about God in his song. For the sake of acceptance and popularity in the culture today, I can see why it's left a bit ambiguous. (One song that defies this reasoning is "I Can Only Imagine" by MercyMe, which has a clear message about the glory of Jesus, but is still played on several secular radio stations.) At least when I listen to it now, I'll know that it actually means what I had hoped it would.
