From Deep to Shallow

Power of prayer

A classmate recently sent out an interesting article about prayer helping in cases of medical healing. Essential to the Christian life, prayer is a truly powerful thing. But not because of the act in itself, but because it is our conduit for connecting with God. I like what Oswald Chambers has to say about prayer. Documenting stuff is great. I have a prayer list for others that I started a couple of months ago. It's amazing to see how God has answered them by working through various situations. God is faithful, even when we are not. Now that's love.

New preceptorship
On Monday, I spent my first afternoon with Dr. Peter Curtin, a hematology/oncology internist who specializes in stem cell transplantation and in the treatment of myelodysplastic syndrome and acute leukemia. Cancer is a tough field mainly because the reality of the situation for many people is that their condition is terminal. And currently, the treatments for cancer are very harsh and involve a lot of side effects (for example, prednisone is a drug used to suppress the immune system and inflammation in transplant patients, and it has 42 known side effects). My preceptor seems like a really cool guy, and I hope to learn a lot this term from seeing patients with him.

Vegetating
My new plan to healthen (yes, I realize that's not a real word) myself up is to increase my intake of veggies. Especially since I tend to eat more often than I need to, this is in attempt to substitute for other less nutritious and more fat/cholesterol/sodium/calorie-rich things like frozen entrees or canned pastas/soups. Fortunately for me, tofu intake will be a compatible component to this plan. Wondering what's the magic behind tofu? I find the opening line of that article to be hilarious. In this day and age, it's hard to imagine that there are still people who don't know what tofu is. Seeing as the link is from "The Carolina Channel," perhaps it's a Southeastern thing?

Word fun
fleeced (tr v.): 1) To defraud of money or property; swindle. 2) To shear the fleece from. 3) To cover with or as if with fleece.
It's cool how a word can have multiple and very different definitions. Like to say that I have been "fleeced." Do I mean that I was defrauded? No! And neither am I referring to the act of having someone shear fleece from me. Rather, I am sitting comfortably in the wraps of (almost) head to toe fleece garments: a fleece pullover, some fleece pants, and a pair of fleece slippers. I could even put on my fleece gloves (though that wouldn't be conducive to typing). Now, it's quite bearable to lounge around my unheated apartment. Fleece is my friend.

Funny quote from the Joey episode tonight
(after being caught for counting cards at a blackjack table in Las Vegas)
Joey: We're going to pretend to be dumb. OK, it's something that works for me all the time. Like when a girl catches me with somebody else, I just go, "But baby, I don't understand what the problem is. I thought she was you!"
