Patien(ts)ce
I believe the children are our future,
Teach them well and let them lead the way,
Show them all the beauty they possess inside,
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier,
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be.. While pretty casual, my preceptorship experience has afforded me some cool opportunities. Spending an afternoon at the doctor's office and watching him conduct exams is educational. Last week, I took a patient history, which involved me asking questions to identify the nature of the visit and other pertinent health information about the patient. Then, I was asked to conduct my first ENT exam on that patient (of course, with the guidance of my preceptor). Being my first time, I was kinda slow. Fortunately, the patient was fairly patient with me. Although I didn't remember the names of all the things I was looking at and palpating (a fancy word for touching), my preceptor said that I didn't do too bad a job.
This coming week, I'll be going in on Tuesday (instead of Thursday) to Shriner's Hospital (a children's hospital located on the OHSU campus) to observe my preceptor. It'll be my first glimpse into pediatric care of problems relating to the ear, nose, and throat. Up to now, all the patients I've seen at my preceptor's clinic have generally been older. Anyway, I plan to have some good interaction with the kids (hopefully, their problems aren't too serious, because that would be sad to see).
