A Different World

It's still quite weird for me to be here. Here in Portland, that is. It's very different, and I'm only adjusting to it slowly. The unfamiliarity of it all is a major issue, but more than anything, I miss the community of people I was once a part of. I'm really appreciative to have contact with some people since I've been here (Edena, Frogmochi, Wenge, Pocahontas, Cynosure, Vince and Jenn). It'll be nice to see some familiar faces this weekend when I'll get to see Jerm, Niki, Jenn, Superman, and Oregon Duck.

Except for a good amount of clothes (which Jerm/Niki will be bring up this weekend), I'm pretty settled into my new apartment. I just went out today and bought some more stuff (like a microwave and a wok) at Walmart. It's decently liveable (save the lack of tv/internet, which in some ways, renders the place unliveable to a tv junkie/internet buff like me).

Some random items:

Dressing the part
The MD program and the facilities here are really nice. There is a big focus on patient interaction, meaning we get to start preceptorships our first year! During orientation, we were given our doctor's white coats. Doesn't seem so special, except that it symbolizes a lot more I guess. We'll be having a white coat ceremony next Friday that will officially recognize us as entering the field of medicine. Personally, I've worn my share of white lab coats, so I'm not that touched..

Stuck on you
Apparently, I was missing some important vaccinations/immunizations, so I had to go in to the Student Health Service and get shots. I was due to be stuck with 2 today, with another 2 coming next week! Ugh.. I don't mind the needles and such per se, but being poked leaves sore/tender spots on me.

Dessert and then some
Yesterday night, I went to Safeway and used the free Dreyer's coupon that Christine (thanks!) provided. After scanning in my ice-cream ($5.99), the guy scanned the coupon (-$5.99), and then he asked for my club card at which point I entered the phone number and consequently got another (-$2.49) from the price since the ice-cream was on sale (2 cartons for $7.00). I ended up walking away with a half gallon of Fudge Tracks Dreyers Grand Light ice-cream and $2.49 in my pocket, having spent no money of my own.

Good eats
There are so many fast food places around, it's amazing. The best part, though, is the no sales tax policy because it means I end up saving money and get to deal with less random change. Since coming, I've had KFC, Arbys, and Wienerschnitztel. Oregon Duck was right.. this is cool!

Horsing around
I'm not a big fan of horseradish (it goes well with beef?), but I am willing to try it and develop a taste for it because I want to be able to enjoy the same types of things that the person I care for does. Same goes for cilantro (parsley's pungent, latino cousin). The things I do for that special someone.. =)
