Skiing Story

This past weekend, I went with a whole bunch of cool people to the Sugar Bowl resort at Lake Tahoe. Various people have already posted nice entries about the general experience (see Mr. RazzleDazzle, JenniferYellow, Oregon Duck), so I won't get into those kinds of details. Instead, I'm going to chronicle a brief adventure I had on the second day of snow-fun..

This is me, bursting with skiing confidence after a tough struggle with learning how to snowboard the previous day..

It all began when I decided to conquer the East Face trail on Disney Mountain.
(it's the one going down right in the middle)

Even if it was closed, I would not be stopped!

Since it was open, I managed to make my way down the steep trail that was East Face.. Yes! It was exhilarating, fast and furious! (OK, so it wasn't furious, but I just wanted to use the phrase).

Later, on my way down to meet everyone else, I took a wrong turn and ended up facing this. The view down was no help.. As you can see, there was hardly a trail to be followed through the trees (characteristic of a double-black diamond trail).

So, I tried looking back up.. (the single windy path is the one that I made). This picture also illustrates how steep the thing was.

In my past, I have had the unfortunate experience of running into a tree (albeit slowly and from the side). Not wanting to duplicate that scenario, slowly, I made my way through the trees going from side-to-side in a fairly controlled manner. When I finally got out of the trees, I found myself in fresh powder snow that had not been plowed through yet (apparently I was the first person to go through this trail in the past day or two). Gliding across, my poles would sink in as I forged a path across the white plain towards the other trail.

I was glad to meet up with people, get back to the car, and take-off. I felt like I got some good runs under my belt while skiing this time.. my next endeavor will be to jump out of a helicopter and start skiing.

(this was actually taken at the beginning of the day, but it is representative of Jenn and I all decked out and near my car, which happened both in the morning and in the afternoon)

THE END
