NYC
I am in the city now. New York City. (Actually, I'm at New York Medical College's library at the moment.) It's pretty cold out here, but not altogether unpleasant. Over the next couple of days, I will get the chance to explore the city a bit, go through an interview, and then do pretty much the same thing in Philadelphia.
So far, I've been relaxing for the most part. When I first got in to La Guardia Airport, I took a taxi and visited my friend Wes' girlfriend's apartment in the East Village. We hung out for a while just chatting and stuff. Afterwards (around 3am), his friend Tony picked us up and we all went to a pizza place called "Sal's" (a hole-in-the-wall joint like Blondie's or Fat Slice) for a late night snack. I've known Wes for a long time, since middle school. It's cool to be able to know and keep contact with a person through the years. Getting back to Wes' apartment, we prepared for bed, but didn't really get to sleep until quite a while later because we got to talking. Mostly, it was reminiscing about the past and talking about his current situation in med school, it was like a sleepover.
Today was a pretty chill day. Woke up late (close to noon), and then headed out to the cafeteria here for Wes to study for a pharmacology quiz tomorrow. I brought a book along with me to read called "Jesus, M.D." by Dr. David Stevens (which I am borrowing from Oregon Duck - thanks! I hope you don't mind - since it was accidentally given to me by Superman). This book is written from the perspective of a former missionary doctor who uses Jesus as the ultimate example of what it is to be a great doctor. The author uses a lot of examples from his own experience, and so it's been very interesting for me to read. A memorable quote was, "Even God has a hard time steering parked cars. You have to get yourself moving before God can show you where he wants you to go." Reading this book, I am reassured about choosing a career in medicine and am encouraged by the opportunities I will have as a Christian doctor.
The next couple of days should be fairly exciting (and tiring). Tomorrow, I'm going to try and meet up with Brooklyn-dweller, CMYK00 for dinner. I'm looking forward to it. Anyway, I will post some pictures of my trip when I get back.
Prayer is greatly appreciated! Interviews can be stressful, and traveling itself has its own set of hazards.
