(un)Great Expectations
The same message came to me twice yesterday via two different programs that I happened to watch parts of. One, a movie called "Secret Santa" starring Jennie Garth (of Beverly Hills 90210) and the other a televised sermon by Pastor Joel Osteen from Lakewood Church. From such different sources, it was clear to me that there was some divine intervention in helping me to get exposed to what God wanted me to know.
The message that really hit home was that we ought not set expectations for when we choose to give or demonstrate love for other people. Expectations most readily come in the form of desiring something in return, and it can be either tangible or intangible. It seems very reasonable and fair to us. But that's not how God worked in sending His Son Jesus to die for us through grace, and it's not how we are called to be. It's easy to fall in this trap and it can end up leading to disappointment and dismay. I hope that I can live a life of unconditional and unexpectant love, for that is what I experience on a daily basis.
