Pirate's Booty
Conferences can be like bazaars because companies set-up booths and peddle their wares. But unlike bazaars, at a conference, there's usually a good amount of free stuff that's handed out by exhibitors. While there wasn't anything too spectacular, I did manage to plunder the following bag of useful goodies:
1 brain-shaped, squishy toy
1 aluminum travel mug
1 plastic travel mug
1 easy-spout water bottle
1 ceramic mug, complete with matching ceramic coaster/lid
1 combination tipped, pen-sized screwdriver
3 highlighters
3 color-changing, light-up pens
10 assorted retractable pens from different companies
3 "Society for Neuroscience" lanyards
1 hardcover book entitled, "The Brain"
2 refrigerator magnets
1 innovative staple remover (it's weird looking, but works great)
1 waterproof key/money container
1 keychain mini-flashlight
1 copper-colored, metal bookmark
The real key to getting free stuff from exhibitors is to be shameless. Be honest and don't express any interest in their products, which makes sense given that you didn't really have any. For non-junior/senior college students, a career fair is an excellent source of office supplies and colorful, light-up bouncy balls (if you are a junior/senior and looking for a job/internship, you should actually be paying attention to the recruiters and not their loot).
