Phunny Phone
My phone is laughable. Like when people (usually girls) see my phone, they laugh. The more straight-forward people will ask, "Yo, what happened to your phone, man?" While others just say, "Dude, get a new phone.." What makes it such a conversation piece isn't its cracked plastic faceplate. Rather, it's the 2 pieces of bright yellow tape streaming up the sides of the phone, strategically placed to hold together the broken faceplate without blocking my view of the reception or battery bars on the screen. If MacGuyver owned a cell phone, it would be reminiscent of this. But let me tell you, my phone didn't always look like that.
The reason it's taped up is because the faceplate is made of two pieces, and at the moment, the two pieces are separating from each other. The reason the two pieces are coming apart is that I stuffed a little piece of tissue inside that caused the faceplate to strain and eventually crack. The reason the tissue is in there is because my screen was going on the fritz due to the pressure from the faceplate on the rubber seal around the screen. The reason pressure on the rubber seal causes my screen to go crazy is because of a Nokia design flaw. The reason I don't get a new phone is because a good replacement costs money, and if I do, I might have to switch providers (I like my curent phone number). Besides, I have good memories with this phone.
This was my first cell phone, a good ol' Nokia 8290. Lacking a color screen or wireless web, it was still feature-rich for its time (including voice-activated dialing, customizable ringtones, a built-in calendar, and text/picture messaging). Sure, the reception isn't top notch (Cingular is just as much to blame for that), but without an external antenna, it slips right into my pocket with ease. It's quite functional, too, with a large memory and a long battery life.
I just took off the current pieces of tape on my phone and replaced them with fresh yellow strips (the old ones were getting a bit dingy). We have lots of different colored tape around here.. perhaps I should mix and match to make my phone look extra cool.. what do you think?
