Commuter Culture

I find it interesting that we live in a culture where driving can be such a big part of a person's life. Bay Area commuters spend that time in their cars because the Bay Area is huge. A "lap" around the bay (from Berkeley south on the 880 to the 237 west to the 101 north and to the I-80 Bay Bridge back to Berkeley) would be approximately 110 miles (based on my own personal experience). I probably spend an average of 1.75 hours in my car everyday. Sometimes more, sometimes less. People in L.A. can probably spend that amount of time in their cars not going very far, but just because of traffic. That would severely bug me. But it really stresses the importance of having a comfortable car, especially if you're gonna be spending so much time in it. I'm happy =) to know that the 2003 Toyota Camry is the most quiet and lowest vibration vehicle in its class. Props to Toyota for making a quality automobile. Props to God for allowing me to afford it.

I've had my car since the second week of December, but only drove it one week during that month. That makes for a total of 18 weeks of usage. How many miles are on my car now? About 11,500. If you do the math, that averages out to over 600 miles per week. Considering that I've never even taken a trip down to Southern California with my car yet, that's a whole lotta driving. In a couple of months, I will overtake both Jenn & Chia in the mileage on their respective, cool cars (VW Beetle and Audi A4), both of whom have had their cars for over a year. (It rather sucks to be my car, especially since I drive it so much and drive it so hard. Like if it had feelings, I could imagine it saying, "why do you use me so much?..do we really need to get there so fast?..it's 2am, can't I get some rest, puh-lease!?") There are only two people I know who drive as much as I do, and they are both from the Chien family. At the current rate, I'll be over 30,000 miles by the end of the year. I have a feeling that my "extended" warranty is gonna run out real quick.
