As I Lay Me Down
(to sleep)
I'm finding that it really doesn't matter how much sleep (in terms of hours) or even what kind of sleep (in terms of quality) I get. How rested I feel and how much I am in the mood for sleep after a long day is so much more a consequence of my attitude and perception of situations. I slept 16 hours from Sunday night to Monday morning. That's a lot. Not quite, but almost Garfield-style. And it was good sleep, too. But when I woke up, went to work, how I felt was nothing different than had I just gotten my normal 6-7 hours.
Sleep cycles are regulated by the brain subconsciously. How nice would it be to be able to have complete control over the process. The brain is truly a complex entity, responsible for so many aspects of who we are. I have this little squishy toy of a brain I picked up while at a neuroscience seminar sponsored by the Stanford Brain Research Institute. It's not a very accurate representation of the brain (especially after I give it a good squeeze), but it still gets me thinking about the how important the brain is.
