OK, that was dumb. I just wasted 15 minutes and some gas. I thought I was going to visit the Redwood City Public Library. Before continuing, check this out first, and then come back.
Back? What you just visited is a listing of the Hours and Locations of the Redwood City Public Library. I came across this tonight and naively thought to myself, "hey, there's a branch located really close to where I live..let me check it out." The location I'm addressing is the one titled "Redwood Shores." From the looks of that informational page, everything sounds fine. Except that IT'S NOT. Here's what transpires after I get out of the car.
First I see a building labelled, "Sandpiper School." Looks like a small elementary school (nothing unusual about that.. a library could be next to a school). Then, I walk past this gymnasium-like room, where all of these women are doing yoga or something (it's a community center, with strong resemblance to a YMCA-type dealio). I ask this janitor guy in one of the classrooms where the library is. "Library?" he says. "It's probably in that building" (points to a building in the front left). I should've been tipped off by the "probably." A library shouldn't "probably" be there, it is either there or not. I walk around the building, only to find that there is no sign that denotes, "library." (What I do see is signs for "Child Care Center" and "Community Center".) I decide to enter the "Community Center" because there appear to be people staffed at the front desk. Peering down the hallways and such, I still see no library. One of the receptionists asks, "may I help you?" I tell her that I'm looking for the public library. She smiles and points to this kiosk on one of the walls with two computers in front of it. "We only have a virtual library here." A virtual library? No wonder I couldn't find it, their idea of a library was two networked computers labeled, "Online Virtual Library." What in the world?
Needless to say, I was disappointed. Honestly, could you tell from the Hours/Location webpage that this "Redwood Shores" branch was really not a branch at all? I couldn't, and thus, got duped. Seems like that's been happening to me a lot these days (first the movie "Solaris" and now this...what's next??)
